Car problems

Common car problems explained: what each symptom usually means, whether it is safe to drive, and how to get help from a local garage or mobile mechanic.

Car won’t start Most cars that won't start have a flat battery, but a clicking starter, a fuel problem or an immobiliser fault can look similar. What you hear when you turn the key tells you which. Flat car battery A flat battery is the most common reason a car won't start. A jump start often gets you going, but if it keeps happening the battery or the charging system needs testing. Engine warning light Red warning lights mean stop as soon as it is safe; amber lights mean get the car checked soon. A flashing engine light usually means a misfire and needs attention straight away. Engine overheating An overheating engine is usually low on coolant, or has a faulty thermostat, fan or water pump. Stop as soon as it is safe: driving on can cause serious engine damage. Flat tyre With a flat tyre, get somewhere safe first, then use the spare, a sealant kit or a mobile tyre fitter. Many punctures in the tread can be repaired; sidewall damage means a new tyre. Clutch or gearbox problem A slipping clutch, a spongy pedal or grinding gear changes usually mean clutch wear or a hydraulic fault. Most clutch and gearbox repairs are workshop jobs, so get it checked before it fails completely. Squeaking or grinding brakes Squealing brakes usually mean the pads are nearly worn; grinding means metal on metal and needs attention straight away. Judder, pulling or a soft pedal all need checking. Loss of power or limp mode Sudden loss of power usually means the engine computer has found a fault and put the car into limp mode. Turbo, DPF, sensor and fuel problems are the usual causes. DPF problems A DPF warning light means the diesel particulate filter is getting blocked with soot. A steady motorway-speed drive often clears it; if not, a garage can force a regeneration or clean it.
